 Plow horse competition Wiallamette Valley Oregon 2007  

There was a time when men, mules and horses worked the fertile soil of the . These were the days before the steam tractors and later the gasoline and diesel rigs. In the early days a farmer and his team worked the fields form sun up till sundown. There was no such thing as a GPS (global positioning satellite) to assure you ferrules were straight. It was just you and the horses to guide the plow.   Today in that grand tradition there are still generations of farm families who still know how to work a team and this tradition is passed down from a generation who grew up when horse farming was still the norm. Every Spring farm families from all over the valley meet at Champoeg state park which is the site of one of the earliest settlements in the valley along side the Willamette river to compete with there teams in a plowing competition. This is a chance for the public to come and take a look back in to history.

Oregon Draft Horse  Breeders Association annual plowing competition Chompeg State Park. Each year members of this association and farming famlies from all over the Willamette Valley gather to remember the past and to show off there talents and teams in a plowing competition.   Some of these folks still farm exclusively with horses. There are some small family farms who wish to farm in an ecological friendly manor. Welcome to Oregon we do things in our own fashion. I am always amazed to see the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next. There are grandfather, fathers and sometimes great grand children at these events to learn how to carry on the traditions of or past.   The horses are amazing to see in person and close up and to watch them at work with there handlers is like watching a great artist at work and in this case the canvas is mother earth her self. The field comes alive as the earth is turned under by the plow. Man and animal working in tandem something long forgotten in this world of high tech and corporate farming. It is good to see people remembering and passing on our grand heritage to the next generation.
